Friday, September 16, 2011: The authors of “Under the Clock, The Story
of Miller & Rhoads” will take us back to the heyday of retail in downtown
Richmond. Earle Dunford, former city editor of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and
George Bryson, former executive vice president at Miller & Rhoads, will discuss
the birth of the book and illustrate their talk with old photos.
Friday, October 21, 2011: Mature Moderns will meet at the beautiful
Virginia War Memorial. The names of more than 11,600 Virginians who gave their
lives for their country can be found there on the glass and marble walls. Our
own Russ and Halma Wilson are volunteers at the museum and will provide us with
a tour at 11:00 a.m. The Virginia War Museum, 621 S. Belvidere Street, is at the
north end of the Lee Bridge. Transportation is on your own although interested
persons may carpool from the church.
Friday, November 18, 2011:
Peter Stech will help us avoid becoming a victim of identity theft. He will
define identity theft, explain how it happens, and describe the results. The
program will provide general prevention ideas and steps to be taken by theft
victims. Peter provides countless hours of support for BAPC’s computers and
understands the challenges that technology presents.
No program is scheduled for December.
Friday, January 20, 2012: In land area, what is the second largest
country in South America and the eighth largest country in the world? If you’re
puzzled, come hear retired VCU professor Harold Greer as he presents “Argentina:
The Country at the End of the World.” Drawing on his expertise on all things
South American, he will introduce us to Argentina and explain the meaning of his
thought-provoking title.
Friday, February 17, 2012: Pot luck lunch at 11:30 a.m. (Note time
change.) Marty Glenn Taylor of Tappahannock, author of “The River Me” will
read passages from her memoir of life along the Rappahannock in the village of
Morattico during the 1930s and ’40s. She recreates the country store,
unforgettable characters, church life, holiday traditions, and watermen at work.
She earned a master’s in English from UR and has taught there and at VCU.
Friday, March 16, 2012: The Chesapeake Bay is a national treasure for
which each Virginian is a steward. Chuck Epps of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation
will explain the bay’s importance and how its health can be maintained and
improved.
Friday, April 20, 2012: Have you ever wondered what really goes on during
a presidential campaign? Jerry Quigg will speak about presidential debates.
Drawing on his experience while Vice President for Development and University
Relations at the University of Richmond, Jerry will share tales from the
presidential debate between Bush 41 and Clinton, held at UR in 1992.
